Chapter 13
âSo Chase and Julian have teamed up with the kids to play video games,â Vic said as he strode into the quiet empty living room, where Luc had spent the last hour trying to make sense of his life.
He said nothing, and Vic just stood there, staring down at him where he sat with his feet up, holding a square-cut tumbler of vodka heâd helped himself to from the bar. He swirled the liquid and wondered whether Vic would add something about him drinking or maybe how he should be feeling.
âYou sure about this?â Vic said.
He flicked his gaze back over to his brother, who hadnât moved but was standing across from him, still staring down at him with what was perhaps unease.
âYup.â He tipped the glass back and swallowed. The burn was welcome.
âWhy donât I believe you?â Vic had moved closer. From his expression, Luc had no fucking idea what his brother was thinking.
âDoes it matter if you do?â Now he was being an asshole. The problem was that he didnât know where he stood with Vic. He was such a hard-ass, and Luc never had been able to read him. Aaron, yeah, all twisted and fucked up and always there in a second. Chase was the mother hen, whose phone calls always started with âAny problems? Howâs dating, your job, and anything else I need to know?â It had always been years between the times he heard from Vic, months and months. He had never reached out until now.
âHey, I care,â Vic said. âI may not show it, but Texas⦠Think about it. I can give you a job here, something good, and itâs not pity, Luc. I know you think it is.â Vic was beginning to sound as if he were pleading a case, and the best argument would win.
âSo Iâm a prize, or what is this, Vic? Iâm pretty sure with Chase and Rose, even Aaron and Brittany, youâd never try to get them to walk away from the one they love. The only difference between us is that Iâm into men, not women. Itâs not a choice. Itâs who I am, and I love that guy. He wants a chance to have something with meâand yes, marriage. We won the fight, the right to be happy. You may not like it, you donât have to like it, but you have to respect my right to choose who I want to be with.â
Vic had gone stone cold, and he wasnât sure what he was thinking. Maybe heâd ask him to leave or say, âHave a happy life. So long.â
âOf course you do,â Vic said. âHow could you think any of this has anything to do with you being gay? It doesnât even come into the equation, and sorry, maybe Iâm being kind of a hard-ass, kind of a jerk about things, but I donât mean to be. Itâs just that I left all of you. Chase was okay, heâll always be okay, and Aaronâ¦youâre wrong there.
